TuneCore, one of the world’s largest DIY music distribution platforms, has promoted Andreea Gleeson to CEO.

Gleeson is TuneCore’s first CEO since Scott Ackerman, who stepped down in April of last year.

Following Ackerman’s departure, New York-based Gleeson and his colleague, Matt Barrington, were jointly promoted to co-managers of TuneCore.

Now, with Gleeson in the vacant CEO position, Barrington retains his position as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of TuneCore.

TuneCore has been owned by Believe, headquartered in Paris, since 2015, the same year Gleeson joined the company as head of marketing.

In the 12 months of 2020, according to Believe’s financial records, TuneCore raised – and then paid out to independent artists – around 365 million euros ($ 412 million) in royalties and other related income.

TuneCore distributes 100% of the royalty money it collects to artists; its bottom line is based on membership fees paid by its members, which amounted to 32.4 million euros (approximately $ 37 million) in consolidated revenue last year.

According to Midia Research, DIY artists downloading their music through TuneCore, DistroKid and SoundCloud generated $ 1.2 billion globally last year – the first time this industry has collectively passed the annual billion dollar mark.

This DIY / “direct artist” sector experienced 34.1% growth in annual turnover in 2020, says Midia. (Watch out for TuneCore, under the leadership of its new CEO Gleeson, to surpass the $ 500 million annual gross revenue milestone in 2021.)

Gleeson, who is stepping down from his previous role as Chief Revenue Officer at TuneCore, will report to Believe CEO Denis Ladegaillerie in his new role.
