Independent film stars for the Hollywood Reporter panel – The Hollywood Reporter

Six artists who are currently winning awards for their work in the 2021 independent films will appear in the eighth annual AFI Fest Independent Nominee Panel – as always, presented by Hollywood journalist and moderated by yours truly – to discuss the challenges and benefits of making independent films: Caitriona balfe (supporting actress, Focus’ Belfast), Nicolas cage (lead actor, Neon’s Pig), Colman Domingue (supporting actor, A24’s Zola), Ann dowd (supporting actress, Bleecker Street’s Mass), Dakota johnson (supporting actress, Netflix’s The lost girl) and Simon rex (main actor, A24’s Red rocket).

This year’s AFI Fest will run from November 10-14. For the second year in a row, the 75-minute Indie Contenders panel will take place virtually. Images of the entire conversation will debut on the AFI Fest Eventive platform on Saturday, November 13 at 1 p.m. PT, and will then be made available on this website.

The 2020 edition of the panel, which you can watch here, featured Ahmed Rice (Main actor, The sound of metal), Rachel Brosnahan (Main actress, I’m your wife), Winston Duke (Main actor, Nine days), Julia garner (Main actress, The assistant), Vanessa Kirby (Main actress, Pieces of a woman), Elisabeth Mousse (Main actress, The invisible Man and Shirley), Carey mulligan (Main actress, Promising young woman) and Andy Samberg (Main actor, Palm springs).

The 2019 edition, which you can watch here, featured Awkwafina (Main actress, The farewell); Sterling K. Brown (supporting actor, Waves); Cynthia Erivo (Main actress, Harriet); Jimmie fails (Main actor, The last black man in San Francisco); Jon hamm (supporting actor, The report); Florence pugh (Main actress, Fight with my family and Environment); Kerry Washington (Main actress, american son); and Alfre woodard (Main actress, Clemency).

The 2018 edition, which you can watch here, featured Willem Dafoe (Main actor, At the gates of eternity); Richard E. Grant (supporting actor, Can you ever forgive me?); Catherine hahn (Main actress, Private life); Felicity jones (Main actress, Based on gender); Joanna kulig (Main actress, Cold War); Thomasin McKenzie (supporting actress, Leaves no trace); Rosamund Pike (Main actress, A private war); and John C. Reilly (Main actor, Stan and Ollie and Brothers sisters).

The 2016 edition, which you can watch here, featured Kate beckinsale (Main actress, Love friendship); Adam Pilot (Main actor, Paterson); Sally’s Field (Main actress, Hello, my name is Doris); Rébecca Room (Main actress, Christine); Margo Martindale (supporting actress, The Hollars); Viggo Mortensen (Main actor, Fantastic captain); Ruth negga (Main actress, Magnet); Chris Pin (Main actor, Against all odds); and Miles teller (Main actor, Bleed for it).

The 2015 edition, which you can watch here, featured Ramin bahrani (writer-director, 99 homes); Blythe danner (Main actress, I will see you in my dreams); Saoirse Ronan (Main actress, Brooklyn); Jason segel (supporting actor, The end of the tour); Sarah silverman (Main actress, I smile back); Lily tomlin (Main actress, Grandmother); and Olivia wilde (lead actress-producer, Meadow).
