Highland Books will celebrate ‘Independent Bookstore Day’ on April 30 | Arts

Independent Bookstore Day is a one-day national holiday that takes place at independent bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April.

This year the event falls on April 30 and Brevard’s Highland Books will be participating with authors, a children’s story hour, a literary photo booth, a bookmark contest, drawings, prizes and free books.

The fun begins when the doors open at 10 a.m. Every customer can spin the wheel for a chance to win anything from literary-themed prizes to percentages off any purchase. Each purchase also entitles the customer to choose a free book from a special basket, and for every $100 spent, the customer will receive entry to win a $200 Highland Books gift certificate.

At 1 p.m., children of all ages are invited to a free hour of stories with Highland Books’ Fairy Bookmother as she reads a selection of new and popular picture books.

Young and old are invited to participate in our first annual “Design a bookmark” contest. Pick up patterns at the store on April 30 and return or return them to Highland Books by May 15.

Staff will choose their favorites, the public will vote via social media, and the winning bookmarks will not only receive a $25 gift certificate, but will also have their bookmark printed and distributed to store customers.

Author Megan Shepherd will discuss and sign copies of her latest book “Dog Star” from 3-5 p.m. Based on the incredible true story of a girl, her dog, and the space race, nominated for Carnegie Medal winner and New York Times bestselling author Megan Shepherd crafts a poignant and propelling story that will linger in your heart long after the last page.

Shepherd will also discuss his new book “Malice House” which will be released on October 4. Pre-order this upcoming thriller and enter to win a library cart filled with 15 of Shepherd’s favorite thrillers.

April is Poetry Month, and Highland Books is delighted to host a Poetry Happy Hour with local poet Alyse Bensel.

Beginning at 5 p.m., Bensel will give a reading, answer questions, and sign her latest book, “Rare Wondrous Things: A Poetic Biography of Maria Sibylla Merian.”

Customers should be sure to visit the fun Independent Bookstore Day-themed literary photo booth, as they enjoy browsing a wide selection of new books, including NYT bestsellers, classics, non-fiction and regional selections, a large children’s department, unique titles, and specialty departments, including so many of the books we all know and love.

Highland Books also offers puzzles, journals, coffee, reading glasses, a wide range of literary gift items and an extensive selection of greeting cards.

The store will be open on Saturday April 30 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This day is also the Saturday Walk in the heart of Brevard, so it will be a day full of events and attractions in the businesses of the city center.
