Hear Vetiver cover the “Newhart” theme and other indie artists perform classic TV songs

Alt-folk songwriter Andy Cabic (Vetiver) recorded the above delicious cover of the 1982 theme from “Newhart”, originally composed by the great Henry Mancini! The title will be featured on Stay tuned: season 2, a compilation of many independent artists covering TV songs, curated by the Perpetual Doom label. Listen below. Limited edition tape on the way!

Here’s what Andy says about his song:

Bob Newhart’s slow, tongue-in-cheek humor has always intrigued me. As a young child, Newhart seemed so incongruous among other sitcoms, with odd characters just being themselves, each in a state of confusion, stuck in their ways. Nothing seemed to happen or be that funny, but the laugh track was so consistently loud and unsettling. By contrast, the theme music is a cheerful Henry Mancini number that feels windswept and reassuring, a wonderful accompaniment to the pastoral leadership behind the opening credits, and a perfect TV show theme from a prolific master. . I thought it would be fun to follow the melody and its changes and arrangement, to dig into some of the compositional tools I intended to explore, and to reconnect with that joyful, unsettling calm that I felt in the basement, on a boring school night in the 80s. .
