Celebrate independent bookstores with Blue Heron Books

Celebrate Canadian Independent Bookstore Day with Uxbridge’s own bookseller, Blue Heron Books.

Shelley Macbeth, owner of Blue Heron Books, has plenty of fun for visitors at the April 30 event.

“I’m a grow up or go home person,” she said, noting that she was happy to be able to host entertainment and games in the store again after hosting the event virtually the month before. last year due to COVID restrictions.

“There are about 120 stores across the country all hosting their own event in their own way, and they’ll all be equally wonderful, as each brings their own personality and flair to the day, and that’s what makes these shops so unique and special.”

At the Blue Heron, visitors can chat with celebrity guest booksellers such as Terry Fallis and Marissa Stapley, Bianca Marais and more; write a love letter to your favorite independent store; be a book reviewer; participate in the micro-fiction contest; complete a scavenger hunt; and enjoy other contests, prizes, and exclusive treats and merchandise. Children can also enjoy crafts, puppets and treats in the Blue Heron Studio.

Children and adults of all ages can also enjoy this year’s Story Walk Down Brock, which will feature the story “Hugs” by beloved Canadian author Robert Munch. Residents can walk around Brock to read the whole story in the windows of participating businesses and, if they wish, purchase the book from Blue Heron. All proceeds from the sale of Hugs will be donated to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in honor of Munsch, who was recently diagnosed with the disease.

“It’s going to be a fun day,” Macbeth said of the lineup of activities, noting that the event is near and dear to his heart in that it celebrates all things independent.

“As unique as Canadian independent bookstores are, we are united in our dedication to community and to a world of thought and culture,” said Macbeth. “In times of uncertainty, bookstores offer comfort, entertainment and hope. Indie Bookstore Day is a time to celebrate with our communities and as a community.
